Blog of Feminist Activism Against Porn

This is a blog of the feminist activism of Charliegrrl and others. This is not a blog to debate the ins and outs of feminism, this is a blog to inspire people to get active and take it to the streets! This blog was started to challenge lads mags bringing porn into the mainstream...who knows what the blog will become...

Maxim 100 things you need to know about women...

Maxim online have come up with one hundred things men need to know about women... I've picked out a few...

Number 87: "Your female co-workers are obsessed with the fact that on average they receive less pay than male counterparts--and the fact that they work less overtime and get pregnant is irrelevant to the discussion"

Oh pardon us for 'getting' pregnant and having to care for our children, while you guys do 'constructive overtime' coming up with 100 things men should know about women...

Number 84: "Sixteen percent of American men have been with a prostitute—scientific proof most women are decent in bed"

So men have sex with prostitutes cos some women are shit in bed..? Maybe they can't be bothered to have sex with nobs like you cos they prefer a night in with their vibrator..? Oh wait...that would make it more than 16%...

Number 62: "A British study claims a woman’s chances of getting married drop by 40 percent for every 16-point rise in her IQ. The same increase in IQ for a man boosted his chances of getting married by 35 percent"

So what you are saying is that the greater IQ a woman has, the more likely she is to realise that marriage aint all that it's cracked up to be..?

Number 49: "They dream of one day peeing in a urinal"

Umm...are you aware of the female anatomy..?

Number 37: "Women's public bathrooms are about three times more disgusting than men's"

I 'd love to know how they worked this one out... Try this one out: walk into the ladies toliets...then walk into the gents, and note the wretch in your stomach as the vomit rises in your throat from the stench of urinals...

Number 32: "Girls will not sit on any toilet outside their own home or a five-star hotel. Everywhere else they’re hovering above the toilet in a squat"

Umm...not true.

Number 27: "Gain her trust when you’re out by calling her at 10 P.M. She’ll go to bed content you’re thinking of her, even if you’re slurping Jell-O shots off some skank’s cleavage"

So I take it you guys are all single..?

Nuts publishing a topless photo of a 14 year old girl

This is a link to the incident last year in Sheffield, when a 14 year old girl was photographed topless by Nuts when she was in a club, and her photo published in their magazine.

Lads Mags and Child Protection

UPDATE 30.06.06

Thank you Nuts for updating your message board, yesterday, so that you now clearly state that a person has to be over 18 before they post a partially nude photo of themselves. Also, thank you for adding the clause 6.4 to your terms and conditions which states that in order to upload a partially nude photo of yourself, you have to be over 18...

You may say you are 'smarter' than me...but you underestimate me...

I came across a photo of a young woman in Nuts, who appears to be about 15 years old (pg 37, 23-29th June 2006). This photo had been sent in allegedly from 'Sam' herself via Nuts online message board. (note, pornographic content)

Here they have a thread for women to upload half naked pictures of themselves in the hope of them being published in Nuts magazine.

What concerns me is that Nuts don't seem to have a policy of checking proof of age of the young women who are uploading naked pictures of themselves. There is no age restriction on becoming a member and uploading pornographic photos. The website does not clearly state that the women posing naked must be over 18. The only rules stated for the message board are, you shouldn't post copyright images, and you must not post anything obscene. Some of the young women posing on this message board look younger than 18. Surely to publish pornographic images of young women, they must have 100% proof that the woman is over 18..?

I have just registered two profiles on this message board: Lucy Lowry, female aged 15 and Lucy Lopez, female aged 8. There was no moderation in me as an eight year old becoming a member of this site; my registration was instant and I was instantly able to post messages and upload images. In the public profile of these two, it does not state their age, therefore many young women under 18 could be uploading naked photos of themselves with their age going unrecognised. These photos can potentially be published in Nuts magazine.

Furthermore, Nuts have features, in their magazine, where they invite women to send in half naked photos of themselves, either by post or email. They only state you must be over 18. They don't ask for photo ID as well. But how would they know 100% that the young woman was over 18, if the photo is sent in via post/email and they don't ask for ID with it..?

From this, it seems that Lads Mags are potentially publishing photos in their magazine and on their website of underage girls. They do not seem to have a clear policy in place for checking the age of the women in the photos, nor for becoming a member of a pornographic website. This is a clear child protection issue. This is very irresponsible and could be very serious.

I am contacting relevant agencies/MPs to see what can be done.

Photo of Child Reading Nuts

I've come across this photo on the nuts online message board. It is the profile photo of a female member who has entitled this photo 'perv'. The Nuts message board is where women/girls can upload naked photos of themselves in hope of getting into Nuts. This child looks about 3 years old. Furthermore, why are there pictures of children on a pornographic message board..?

27th June Protest against Lads Mags and The Sport

Ten Minute Rule Bill

Claire Curtis Thomas MP, will be reading a Bill in Parliament, for the regulation of 'unrecognised' porn, as in lads mags and The Daily Sport. It starts at 2pm.

Object are also protesting outside Westminister 2pm to coincide with this.

Get yourself there!

For those who can't make it to the protest...

There are ways we can still show our support and voice our concerns.

  • Email/Write/Phone Lads Mags and The Sport: explain that there is a debate in Parliament today; explain the reasons why you consider their publications to be pornographic; explain why it is inappropriate to have degrading images of women in clear view; complain about their misogyny...
  • Organise a demonstration outside your local WHSmith, Woolworths, HMV or any other retailer you feel appropriate...
  • Demonstrate outside the Sports Head Office in Manchester
  • Hold a stall in a central location, give out leaflets etc...
  • Email your MP to highlight the debate and voice your support

Contact details are available in the 'Complaining' post.

Please note you do not have to ask permission from the police to hold a demonstration outside a shop. Just don't obstruct entry to the shop...

If you email/ring/write, don't give them your full name and don't give any other personal details as they have been known to harass people who criticise them.

Lads Mags and Porn Papers in Sheffield

Thanks to Laura in Sheffield for emailing these pics to me.

WHSmith in Sheffield train station (13.06.06). As you can see, these lads mags are shelved at the eye level of a child. WHSmith clearly are not following NFRN guidelines or their own top shelf policy.

WHSmith Sheffield train station (13.06.06)
The Daily Sport is a pornographic 'newspaper'. The little news it reports on usually has a sexual content. Oh yeah and there's some sport. NFRN guidelines state that such 'newspapers' should be turned over, face down or obscured. So why are WHSmith shelving The Daily Sport at the eye level of a child and in clear view?!?

Spar Sheffield (13.06.06)
ZOO and Nuts not only on the bottom shelf, but also adjacent to children's magazines CBeebies and Noddy! Also, above Bliss, which is a teen girls magazine.

Spar Sheffield (13.06.06)
Lads mags are clearly being promoted here and are not shelved away from children's view. It appears that they even have these shelves labelled with ZOO and FHM slogans.

The woman you most want to breast-feed you is...

ZOO 16th - 22nd June 2006

The results are in...

The woman you most want to...
  • breast-feed you is...Lucy Pinder (who I hear you say..? She's a regular model in ZOO)

"'s...hardly surprising that it's the 32G charms of Pinder that the nation's men would like to suckle. "You don't want it to dry up too soon," explains Mark from Sunderland" (pg.55). least they are aware that breasts have a function, aside from being sex objects that exist solely for male pleasure...that's something at least...

Or maybe not...

Even though Liz Hurley is 'somewhat long in the tooth...', 'the mum-of-one still has absolutely fantastic kahunas. Catch them now before they're covered up again. With a thick coat of real estate tycoon ejaculate, if history's any guide" (pg. 28).

Also, the woman you most want to...

  • pay to have sex with is...Jenna Jameson (the 'US Bongo Queen' apparently)
  • your girlfriend to look like via surgery is...Keeley Hazell (a Zoo model)

Your Country Needs You!

"Women of Britain- your country needs you. Are you good-looking? An extovert? Do you enjoy the occasional soiree out on the town? Splendid! More importantly, do you possess both a) a skirt the size of a Dorito and b) a cavalier disregard for the health of your liver? Then by God ZOO needs you!" (pg. 70)

ZOO are heading off to clubs aound the UK to find the best places for a night out...and to photograph drunk women flash their knickers and get down to some 'lesbian' action.

"Think you've got what it takes? Let us know. Quickly. Before the authorities phone up and say words like 'irresponsible', or 'reckless'. Or 'potentially illegal' "(pg. 70).

You mean encouraging drunk women to express their bodies as sex objects for your titillation..?

Miss Max Power Live 2006

Max Power Live is a car show held in Birmingham 30 June - 2 July. Because cars are boring and men have a short concentration span, they are also holding Miss Max Power Live 2006, where women are signed up for 'boob duty'. "Female? Not grotesquely ugly? Why not enter! See for details" (pg. 17).

I thought we'd moved on from this...

What's In Your Knicker Drawer..?

I'll tell you what's in mine...umm..knickers! Apparently, there's more to it than that...

"Ladies' underwear. A sacred colour-coordinated menagerie of exotic fabrics...[The Temptress, The Seducers, The Slouchers, The Teddy...] the Holy Grail: the knicker drawer... Every week, we'll be stalking, sorry, 'tracking down' your pick of the hottest women in the UK and persuading them to strip down to their scanties. You lucky people..." (pg. 66).

ZOO people, are you aware that stalking is illegal and amounts to sexual harassment...and should not be joked about..? Or was that a Freudian slip..?

Skinner can't control himself...

Mike Skinner from The Streets had to make an apology to Rachel Stevens for saying his song, 'Fit But You Know It...' was written about her...although he should be apologising about something else...

Nuts: 'Why did you recently apologise to Rachel Stevens..?'

Skinner: 'A woman from The Daily Star came up in a nightclub and asked,"Who is 'Fit But You Know It' about?"...she wouldn't go I said, "Rachel Stevens, because I wouldn't be responsible for my actions if I was in the same room as her." It's the sort of thing you say to your mates but you don't want the girl hearing it. It wasn't really about Rachel Stevens. So we emailed an apology'. (9-15th June 2006 pg. 44)

Let me tell you Skinner, Rachel Stevens may well be a beautiful woman, but YOU are responsible for YOUR actions. When a man invades a woman's personal space to rape, sexually assault or harrass, it is ALWAYS the man's responsibility.

Nuts Wet T-Shirt Competition and more

Nuts 9-15th June 2006

Nuts Miss Wet T-Shirt 2006!

Nuts are holding wet t-shirt competitions in clubs around the UK and the grand final will be in London. This edition shows photos of the regional competitions in Norwich and Ipswich. Information of venues and dates will be available from although I will update when I know when and where.
I think we should organise a demo against this...what do you reckon..?

Boobs of the Week!

'Upload your lady's boobs at
With her permission, obviously..' (pg. 11)
Here they have four photos of ladies' breasts and the men have to 'assess' them...
Assess them on what exactly, how apt they seem at feeding babies with milk..?

Nuts Bikini Babe Contest 2006!

Nuts will be present at this years Rip Curl Boardmasters event in Newquay 31st July - 6th August.
Women are encouraged to send their bikini poses to Nuts, with a chance to be selected to appear at the final contest in Newquay. To the left is a pic from the 2004 competition (from BBC Cornwall Surfing Stories)

Nuts Club Strip Challenge!

Coming to a club near you...
This week they were in Liquid in Mansfield. They take pictures, step-by-step, of a woman willing to strip down to her undies and ask questions such as 'Ever had a lesbian experience..?'

Gosh they get around these guys don't they..?

Zoo 'naked and bound in our loft...'

Zoo 26th May - 1st June

In this edition (pg. 39), they refer to a fully clothed picture of Jessica Alba:
'We like hilarious promo shots as much as the next man. But, and call us stupid, we prefer pictures of Jessica Alba in a bikini. Or slowly bending over on a beach. Or, preferably, naked and bound in our loft.'

This is a very dodgy thing to say...sounds rather unconsensual...

Also, they have a cut-out questionnaire to fill in with questions such as:
The woman I would most want...

  • to have breast-fed me (are these guys sick or what..?)
  • to pay to have sex with (sounds like promoting prostitution to me...)
  • my girlfriend to look like, via surgery (saddened...)

Playboy Merchandise

In this blog I will add photos of Playboy merchandise in high street shops...

Lads Mags in Kendal

These two photos were taken in WHSmith Kendal (02.06.06). Again WHSmith are promoting ZOO and Nuts by placing them on these promotional stands.

Asda Kendal (24.05.06). Here Zoo, Nuts and FHM aren't top shelf and Zoo is even promoted on a stand at eye level.

Lads Mags in Lancaster

This photo was taken in WHSmith in Lancaster (12.05.06). As you can see, WHSmith are promoting ZOO by placing it on this central stand.

Naughty naughty...I thought WHSmith had a top-shelf policy..? (Lancaster 12.06.06)

Woolworths in Lancaster (12.05.06). 4 Lads Mags are placed directly above a teenage girls magazine and Smash Hits. Furthermore, they maybe on top shelf, but in this store that is no more than 5 ft.

Again Woolies Lancaster (12.06.06) placing lads mags above teenage girls magazines, so obviously not a one-off...

HMV in Lancaster (12.05.06). Placing FHM on the counter is clearly inappropriate. I rang HMV Customer services and the lady was extremely sympathetic and told me to send a written form of complaint...which I did...but haven't recieved a reply...

Lads Mags in Shops

I've been taking photos of lads mags in shops where they are shelved/promoted in an inappropriate way. I am sick of walking into a newsagents or high street shop and being faced with pornographic images of women. Since when did this become acceptable..!?! Lads mags such as Zoo, Nuts and FHM are pornographic and therefore should be treated as so. This means they shoud be on the top shelf above eye level and not be promoted on news stands or be placed on a counter. These photos are intended for the use of feminists campaigning against lads mags. I will be adding to the list...

This photo was taken in WHSmith in Lancaster (12.05.06). As you can see, Nuts is displayed on a promotional stand near the entrance of the shop. The guy at the till told me I wasn't allowed to take photos in their shop without asking permission and he asked me what I was taking a photo of- I replied that I am taking photos of whereabouts WHSmith places pornography in its stores! I asked him for WHSmith guidelines for stocking magazines, but they didn't have any available... I asked a woman in the queue if she felt the Nuts magazine is pornographic to which she said yes! The guy told me they are told by their distributors as to where they should place such magazines... I rang WHSmith and complained and the woman said she would log the complaint...
